Dealing With Spam

Filed under: Spyware Alerts — admin @ 3:03 pm

Nothing is more annoying than Inbox spam. It seems inevitable that the longer you have an e-mail account the more spam you get on a daily basis.

Before you know it your Inbox is filled with unwanted e-mail. Twenty e-mail accounts and ten years later and I’m starting to get tired of switching. Here are some of the tricks that I use to keep spam to a minimum. The last time I switched e-mail accounts, I kept my old one as a junk account. When you think about it, you kind of know which companies are safe to give your e-mail address to (Amazon, Ebay, any major retailer or organization). If you feel uneasy about giving out your address to enter a sweepstakes, join a mailing list, or whatever; give the address to the junk account. Check it once a month to clean it out and to make sure there are no real e-mails. These are definitely times for the junk or bogus address.

From A Not-So Experienced PC User

Filed under: Spyware Alerts — admin @ 3:01 pm

We use Norton Anitvirus for our computer, and honestly I can’t tell you how it works, but it does. So far, it has detected three types of spyware (probably taken into the computer by me…) and given me instructions on eliminating the problem.

To avoid spam, which can lead to spyware because your clicking on all this stuff and not really paying attention to it (oops, just downloaded something!!!) I just use the filter provided by my yahoo email address. All the emails it identifies as spam go to the junk mail folder, and are automatically deleted after a certain amount of time. Plus, it doesn’t count towards your regular mail. The best advice I have, however, is to be careful. Don’t trust anything you don’t know, and free usually means trouble. Your computer holds all sorts of personal information, and you don’t want just anyone getting their hands on it, even if it’s just to spy on you so they know what to advertise. In that case, my AOL pop-up blocker works just fine.

Not My Buddy

Filed under: Spyware Alerts — admin @ 3:05 pm

Once, when I was at a friend, I suddenly saw a monkey jumping into the screen. It said its name was “Bonzi Buddy” and we both thought it was very funny.

It was telling jokes and doing funny things. I had never seen something like that, but I liked it. When I was back at my appartment, I found the website of the cute little monkey. The website told me “Bonzi Buddy” would make my life much easier because it almost could do anything. It could remember my passwords, help me with sending my emails, and it would make my internet experience much faster. Everything sounded very attractive to me, so I installed the software. In the beginning, everything about the purple gorilla was very amusing. But after a while, when I my new “buddy” started to bore me, I realized my computer was getting very slow and my internet activity was active almost all the time. I searched on the internet (not using Bonzi Buddy) about this issue, and I quickly found this Bonzi Buddy thing actually was spyware, sending me ads and sending back personal information. I uninstalled Bonzi Buddy immediatly and promised myself never to trust any online buddies anymore.

Spyware Problem and Solution

Filed under: Spyware Alerts — admin @ 3:01 pm

I had one main spyware experience on my old computer, I got most of it before I protected myself from spyware and viruses. I had a bunch of different things, the one pops out the most is the Trojan Horse.

By a certain time my computer was going terribly slow so I gave my Tech Savy neighbor a call. My neighbor brought many antivirus and antispyware programs over, when he heard of my computer trouble. The two that caught the most were AVG free and Adware. Both of them are amazing programs. I recommend AVG especially because it is free, and is the best virus protection I have ever had. When scanned, I had over 1000 items of spyware on my computer! These days I scan my computer often. It’s good to stay protected, especially if you are going to download anything off of the net. I still use the same protection programs and I have not had a problem ever again on my computer.
